Nursery Assistant

Main Purpose of Role: The Nursery Assistant position at Ysgubor Fach Crèche is to create an environment where the children are cared for in a safe and happy atmosphere, where all their childcare needs are met, including their development needs.
Job Specification:
Job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
1) Ensuring the safety and appropriate care of the children for whom they are responsible.
2) Developing and maintaining a partnership approach with parents to ensure that early learning needs are met.
3) To work in collaboration with their colleagues in a “team based” environment.
4) To follow all instruction given by the Crèches Manager or Deputy manager whilst adhering to all internal policies and procedures.
5) To provide a range of activities applicable to the age and ability of the children in their care.
6) Familiarise themselves with any individual needs of the children in their care including but not limited to any disabilities or medical history.
7) Maintaining confidentiality in respect of the affairs of the Crèche and not divulging any information to any external third party about the children or families of the children attending the crèche.
8) Attending any training courses organise by the Company in order to enhance their skills any competencies.
9) Alerting the Manager/Deputy Manager where there are any concerns, including safety concerns or the welfare of the children at the Crèche.
10) The post holder will need to be flexible in their approach and will be expected to undertake general housekeeping duties, including, but not limited to cleaning of equipment, preparation of meals or snacks etc.
Person Specification:
Education & Qualifications – The successful candidate must hold a relevant childcare qualification(s) such as, to a minimum of NVQ level 3 or above (or equivalent qualification).

Experience - Experience of working with young children in an early years setting, whilst able to demonstrate previous involvement of working in partnership with parents.

Functional Skills & Knowledge

1) Able to work effectively and sensitively with young children and babies.
2) Strong affinity to work with young children.
3) Good interpersonal skills.
4) Ability to work effectively as directed and at times on their own initiatives.
5) Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is highly desirable

Behavioural Competencies:

General – The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are able to work flexibly using their own initiative in a resourceful manner, whilst being able to resolve difficulties with limited direction.

As important, is the ability to write in a clear, concise manner, using appropriate grammar, style and language for the readers understanding, particularly where internal reports or other documentation needs to be completed. They should also maintain good standards of honesty and integrity, clearly demonstrating fairness and consistency in the way they perform their duties.

Interpersonal Skills – The post holder will be required to work in a team working environment where working in collaboration with others is essential to the smooth running of the crèche. The ability to speak clearly and fluently to both groups and individuals is therefore important. Maintaining standards of honesty and integrity, clearly demonstrating fairness and consistency and the application of values are equally important.

Leadership Skills – The ability to remain focussed and committed to meeting or improving standards of childcare at the Crèche through their efforts.


All posts require DBS checks, as there may be periods of unsupervised access to children.

Additionally, an enhanced DBS check and at least two satisfactory references will be obtained prior to any prospective employee’s commencement of employment.
